Another Gold Box game set in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons universe, Gateway to the Savage Frontier was a game with a fairly interesting plot, and some new innovations on the engine. Despite these positive points, the primary focus of the game is still combat. Unfortunately, most of the combat does seem extraneous, and is seldom brought around by the plot. Basically a fairly linear treasure hunt game, Gateway to the Savage Frontier will probably enjoyed primarily by fans of other Gold Box games who are familiar with the engine and the reliance on combat. If, however, you are looking for heavy-duty RP, you should look elsewhere.
